Job Description

This is a premier, heavy-travel Field Service role for a leading global manufacturer of advanced industrial measurement and control systems (utilizing laser, x-ray, optical, and millimeter wave technologies for wire, cable, hose, and tube production). The client needs an autonomous, customer-facing technician to commission, troubleshoot, and maintain systems right on the customer's plant floor.

Support activities include commissioning (installation), training, troubleshooting, and repairing company equipment. You will travel and spend time onsite with customers, some international and within North America, this travel can be up to 75-80%. Typical travel is flying to clients sites, Monday to Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, depending on the size of the job, although some weekend work may be expected from time to time. A basic understanding of electrical theory and good troubleshooting and communication skills are required. They need someone with a good understanding of PM, Preventive Maintenance. At times you will be switching out boards and may troubleshoot and repair down to the component level at other times.

You will receive OJT, On-The-Job training working with an experienced FST going to their jobs but at some point during your training, you will spend 8-9 weeks in Germany for more extensive training. When you return you will go back to working with the experienced tech until you are ready to go out on your own. To win this opportunity, you will need to show you have a firm grasp of low voltage electronics, the ability to think on the fly, and have great customer service and communication skills as you are the face of this company. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Commissioning: Lead the onsite installation, setup, and live testing of measurement equipment sold to manufacturing plants.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting: Diagnose system breakdowns on the fly; troubleshoot down to the component level and execute board swap-outs to minimize customer downtime.
  • Preventive Maintenance (PM): Execute scheduled service contracts, ensuring equipment operational quality follows strict maintenance guidelines.
  • Customer Training & Support: Act as the technical face of this company; train client plant operators and answer technical questions onsite.
  • Commercial Support: Assist the Sales department with live technical demonstrations and performance evaluations of systems/components.
  • Administration: Maintain a real-time engineering log, write up required field reports, and maintain team continuity through regular communication
Requirements
  • Experience: 4+ years and/or technology experience.
  • Core Electrical/Electronic Skill: Solid, demonstrable understanding of basic electrical theory and low-voltage electronics.
  • Diagnostic Skill: Proven track record of testing, component-level troubleshooting, and structured Preventive Maintenance (PM).
  • Soft Skills: High-level ability to think on the fly under plant-down pressure, paired with exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Prerequisites: Must be able to travel 75–80% (including weekends), hold a valid Driver's License, and hold a valid Passport for the German training and international dispatches.
